The Handyman and The Contractors
The names and circumstances of the owners and other parties are being withheld to protect all parties involved. There is a walk-in shower, 30x60, where the tile grout has gradually disintegrated from about 4 feet to the shower base. Water has gradually gotten in to the backing, which was drywall. Some of the tiles are loose.
I have seen the work of the contractors and handymen - they all do good work.
The first contractor suggested cutting the three walls of the shower at 4 feet, replacing the backing with wonderboard, and installing new tile. $2,200
The second contractor advocated removing all three walls of the shower and the shower door. Rebuild the walls with greenboard, covered by new tile and install a new door. $7000
The handyman suggested much the same as the first contractor, except he called the new backing cement board. $600
Nope, Those are the right numbers alright. What would you do? Remember, I know they all do good work.
