If the Median is the Message......
...Then the City of San Francisco is giving us the wrong message here in West Portal.
The last block of Dorchester Way (between Ulloa Street and Portola Drive) is a bi-level street, separated by an UGLY median strip. In the winter the grass grows crazy, and in the summer it becomes a golden dry brown - the perfect fire hazard! God only knows what else is in it, maybe a few flowers left over from maybe an earlier attempt to tame it, and a HUGE exposed pipe running under the length of it.
A private construction crew was out here a few weeks ago with tons of equipment to fix the sewer, and we hoped maybe we'd get something out of that. But no, you can see a small patch of asphalt in one of the photos - that's it.
This is City property, but they don't even try to maintain it.
Now the neighbors in West Portal are indeed getting restless, and they (we) want something done about it - a permanent solution. There has been a lot of discussion lately on westportal.nextdoor.com. Nearby Portola Drive got a median strip beautification, but not Dorchester Way. The San Francisco Bureau of Urban Forestry needs to step up and do their job!
Neighboring Forest Hill and St. Francis Wood have their own Home Owners Associations that take care of what the City can't. This is only one block in West Portal - you would think the Bureau of Urban Forestry could help us out! Their phone number is 415.641.2677.
