That's right, San Francisco has a new 'HUB' for emergency services - it's called SF72. (www.sf72.org) We all need to know what to do in the case of a city wide emergency, and here the focus is on earthquakes. Everything is different now than it was during the last 'big one' in 1989. Emergencies are opportunities to join together and support people around you. Sharing meals, books, a phone charger. Sharing your electricity when friends don't have it. Cell phones, texting, Facebook, Twitter - it's a whole different world now. You know how different the news would be if there were an earthquake of major dissaster in a major city now. Back in 1989 distant friends and family has to wait days for news of loved ones - the landline phone system couldn't handle the traffic!
At SF72 there is information on what to do in an emergency, how to prepare beforehand, how to get connected with others, and listen to the experiences of others. I like the video stories the best!
And why the 72? The site says "In a serious emergency, city services will be impacted, so a basic rule of thunb is for people to be able to take care of each other for 72 hours before help arrives. That's just 3 days - think of it as a long weekend - or nine meals." In the last earthquake I didn't have electricity for 3 days. A neighbor turned our gas off, so no hot water for a week before the gas company cound find the time to turn it back on. I get it!
