When i first moved to San Francisco's West Portal Village in 2001 there was a store called St. Francis Market. It wasn't the type of place where you would go on a big shopping trip - we have Safeway and others for that. But it was handy for picking up beer or wine, cigarrettes, that last minute item you need for dinner - you know what I mean. Right by the MUNI rail station, so very handy on the way home from work.
We had a long time bakery down the street, West Portal Bakery. It had lots of great breads and treats. And their sandwiches were wonderful and a great deal. Well, the bakery lost their lease, and it bacame Goat Hill Pizza. The last few years have seen a number of changes on West Portal Avenue, due to economic times and even a fire that destroyed two buildings. The buildings lost in fire are being rebuilt. And some other changes are afoot. St. Francis Market lost their lease and were on a month to month basis while the building owners looked for something more suitable for West Portal. Finally they found it, and St. Francis Market closed. Guess it's up to the Easy Freezy Market across the street to fill that need - so far they're not doing it very well..... Here is the vacant storefront now.
But like I said, we're Movin on up here in West Portal. La Boulange Cafe and Bakery applied to the San Francisco Planning Commission for a conditional use permit to locate a store here in West Portal, and they received tremendous support from the neighborhood. Their permit was granted. So come later this fall, it's Welcome La Boulange!
